Post Natal Depression – What Can You Do?
Post natal depression can have a devastating effect upon the relationship a Mother has with her new born baby. It interferes with the bonding process which is essential in the early months, and can lead to behavioural problems at a later stage.
Women who experience this condition have reduced energy levels, and in some cases feel that life is not worth living. This usually occurs during the first year after the birth and is not uncommon. The most important thing to remember is (a) that it will pass, and (b) there is something you can do to help both you and your baby.
Many women are ashamed to admit they’re suffering from PND, but it’s essential medical advice is sought so that you can start to feel more human again.
It has been reported by the BBC that a positive link has been discovered between post natal depression and baby massage, and it’s something you can do in the privacy of your own home.
The BBC quoted Dr. Vivette Glover when she said "But those who went to a baby massage class did much better in mother baby interaction. They were back as normal mothers should be, enjoying their babies."
Tests have shown that the relationship between Mother and baby have improved dramatically during baby massage sessions.
Massaging baby gently at set times can become an important time for both you and your infant. During this time a close relationship will gradually develop which will lower your stress hormones and enable you to actually enjoy your baby.
Whatever the reasons for PND, the important thing to remember is that you and your baby will benefit from spending this precious time together.
The close bond massaging can bring to you and your baby will momentarily help to create a calm and relaxed atmosphere.
